The former Wittichen Supply property, a city block in Birmingham, Alabama’s Parkside district, was historically used for commercial HVAC manufacturing and, from the mid-1940s to 1974, as a chemical supply and mixing facility.
In 2017, environmental assessments revealed elevated chlorinated solvent compounds in soil and groundwater, traced to the former chemical operations, with potential migration risk to the nearby Regions Field complex.
Remediation involved excavating and disposing of approximately 1,400 tons of affected soil, conducting a risk assessment to establish site-specific cleanup levels, and implementing post-remedial groundwater monitoring to confirm effectiveness.
Following review of the assessment, cleanup, and risk analysis, ADEM approved the work without changes, issuing a Letter of Concurrence to the prospective purchaser. This paved the way for the property’s $30 million redevelopment into the Red Mountain Theater Company campus, a training and performing arts center serving Birmingham’s youth and adult dramatic arts community.
