Carraway Hospital Cleanup

Birmingham, AL

Carraway Hospital, a local healthcare institution from the early 1900s until 2011, became a community liability after closing, with significant safety hazards including asbestos, lead-based paint, and medical waste throughout the site.

As part of the $350 million hospital complex redevelopment—the largest urban blight removal project in Birmingham’s history—we conducted extensive environmental assessments in 2019 for a prospective purchaser planning a mixed-use complex featuring residential, retail, commercial developments, and a new downtown amphitheater.

The project required close coordination with community stakeholders and thorough historical research before soil and groundwater sampling could begin. Over 18 months and four assessment phases, we evaluated hazardous materials and developed a comprehensive site management plan to address contamination and guide safe construction activities.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management approved the cleanup process in 2021, enabling this landmark economic development project in north Birmingham to move forward.
